How Vision Helps Learning in Mississauga

Children rely on their vision for more than 80% of their learning, so it is crucial that your child undergo regular eye exams to detect any vision problems as soon as possible.

Early detection and treatment of vision problems is a critical component of your child’s eye health.

Kid’s Eye Exam Schedule

According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists, children should have their first eye exam at 6 months old. If you have any concerns about your kid’s vision or eye health, you should bring them in sooner. We recommend an eye exam for your child annually.

Your optometrist may recommend that your child come in more frequently if they have vision problems.

Eye Exams Designed for Children

Since children do not always communicate the same way as adults, we employ specialized methods during our children’s eye exams. This allows us to assess the health of your child’s eyes effectively and determine whether or not they require corrective lenses.

Our doctors at Queensway Optometric understand that visiting the optometrist can be a nerve-wracking experience for children. Our friendly team in Mississauga will do everything they can to keep your child at ease and engaged during their exam.

Partnering with the Eye See…Eye Learn® Program

According to a study done by Public Health Ontario, 19 million children worldwide under the age of 15 have one or more vision impairments. When vision problems go undetected, they can have serious consequences on a child’s ability to learn.

Though children may not know or always tell us they are experiencing vision problems, there are signs we can look for, such as:

  • Eye rubbing
  • Eye strain
  • Headaches
  • Decreased concentration
  • Some learning problems

To ensure all young children have a chance to visit the optometrist, Queensway Optometric Centre has partnered with the Eye See…Eye Learn® program to ensure children entering junior kindergarten see their best. Our practice has also adopted 20 local schools to promote children’s eye exams in the community.
