What to Expect During an Exam

Annual eye exams are essential to good eye health. During your comprehensive exam, we evaluate both your vision and eye health by:

Conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure can affect your eyes, increasing your risk of developing diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. The early stages of these eye diseases and other eye conditions may only be detectable during an eye exam and can result in vision loss if they are allowed to progress.

The Aging Eye

Our eyes need even more attention as we grow older as they undergo many age-related changes.
Some ways our vision changes over time include:

  • Colour Vision Changes: The cones in our eyes responsible for colour vision become less sensitive over time, making it more difficult to distinguish the difference between certain shades of colour.
  • Low-Light Vision Changes: Our pupils become smaller and less responsive to light as we age, meaning our eyes need more light to see clearly. Good lighting at home and work can help prevent falls associated with low lighting.
  • Dryer Eyes: As we age, the glands in our eyes may produce fewer tears, which can lead to dry eyes and irritation. Dry eyes can cause blurry vision, eye fatigue, and headaches. But they are treatable.
  • Increased Risk of Ocular Diseases: Our eyes become more susceptible to age-related diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. These diseases can lead to vision loss, and seniors with vision loss are at an increased risk of falls.

Vision loss affects quality of life, but many are preventable. Visit your optometrist at Queensway Optometric Centre in Mississauga regularly to manage your eye health and protect your vision.
