Putting in contact lenses for the first time can feel a little strange, but our team at Queensway Optometric Centre can help you get the hang of the process. Think of it like learning any new skill—it might seem awkward initially, but it quickly becomes a normal part of your day.
The key is to follow a few simple steps that include preparing your space, checking the lens, and using a gentle technique to place it on your eye. Learning these steps during a professional contact lens exam will help you handle them with ease.
Get Your Hands & Your Space Ready
Before you touch your lenses, it’s important to get ready. A clean space and clean hands help keep your eyes comfortable and healthy all day long.
Wash & Dry Your Hands
Start by washing your hands thoroughly with a mild soap that doesn’t contain extra oils, lotions, or perfumes. Rinse them well and dry them with a clean, lint-free towel. Regular towels can leave tiny fuzz behind, which can stick to your lens and irritate your eye.
Choose a Clean & Well-Lit Spot
Find a comfortable spot in front of a mirror with good lighting. A flat, clear surface like a table or counter is ideal. If you’re in the bathroom, remember to put the plug in the sink—just in case you accidentally drop a lens.

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
First, Check Your Lens
Gently slide the lens out of its case and place it on the tip of your dry index finger. Hold it up and look at it from the side. The lens should look like a tiny, curved bowl. If the edges flare out like the rim of a soup plate, it is inside out. Simply flip it over carefully.
Now it’s time for insertion. It can be helpful to always start with the same eye, either right or left, to avoid mixing up your lenses if you have different prescriptions.
The Insertion Method
- With the lens on your dominant index finger, use the index finger of your other hand to gently pull your upper eyelid up toward your eyebrow.
- Use the middle finger of your dominant hand—the one with the lens—to pull your lower eyelid down.
- Look straight ahead into the mirror or slightly upward.
- Slowly and steadily bring the lens toward your eye and place it gently on the coloured part of your eye.
- Once the lens makes contact, slowly let go of your eyelids. Blink a few times to help the lens settle into place.
Common Hurdles & Easy Fixes
If you find the process difficult at first, you are not alone. Almost everyone hits a few snags when they’re new to contacts. Here are a few common challenges and what you can do about them.
Hesitation to Touch Your Eye
Your natural blink reflex is strong, and it’s there to protect your eyes. The key is to hold your eyelids open firmly but gently so that you can’t blink. Remember to breathe, take your time, and move slowly.
The Lens Folds or Falls Off
This usually happens if your finger or the lens is too wet, which makes it want to stick to your finger instead of your eye. After rinsing your lens, you can gently shake any extra solution off before placing it on your fingertip. A dry fingertip gives the lens a better surface to release from.
Watery Eyes
Watery eyes are a normal reaction when you’re learning. If your eyes start to tear up, just take a break and pat them dry. If discomfort continues, you may want to consider learning how to manage dry eyes with contacts.
