Common Contact Lenses

The science behind contact lenses is continually advancing, making soft contact lenses an option for more people every day. Soft contact lenses are available in a variety of types, including spherical, toric, and multifocal. They are also available in a variety of replacement frequencies, like daily, bi-weekly, or monthly, to best suit your vision needs and lifestyle.

RGP contact lenses are typically used by patients with high prescriptions and strong astigmatism and offer excellent acuity. This style of contact lens is prescribed less frequently and is meticulously designed to suit individual corneas. RGP contact lenses are made from durable materials, which means they only need to be replaced annually.

For some patients, conventional contact lenses may exaggerate the symptoms of dry eyes. Our optometrists can introduce you to scleral lenses, a type of contact that vaults over the cornea, resting on the sclera, the whites of the eye.

Some patients feel much more comfortable using scleral lenses. A contact lens exam & fitting at our optometric centre can determine if these lenses are right for you.

Specialty Contact Lenses

Depending on your prescription and the unique needs of your eyes, your eye care professional may recommend specialty contact lenses. Queensway Optometric Centre offers a variety of specialty lenses including:

Aspheric contact lenses are lenses that are specifically designed for individuals with mild astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when a patient’s cornea or lens is irregularly shaped. To compensate for the unique curvature caused by astigmatism, specially shaped contact lenses are needed.

Although individuals with high astigmatism are often prescribed toric contact lenses. Aspheric lenses are one way for individuals with low astigmatism to achieve crisper, clearer vision.

Toric lenses are also used to correct astigmatism. Toric lenses contain different prescriptions along the horizontals and verticals of the lens. This gives them the ability to counteract astigmatism and provide patients with clear, crisp vision.

Toric lenses are weighted at the bottom to orientate themselves properly when you blink, ensuring that the prescriptions on the lens match the prescription of your eye.

Multifocal contact lenses work like multifocal eyeglasses and are specifically designed for those who have presbyopia. Presbyopia occurs as we age and affects the lenses in our eyes, making it difficult to focus on objects that are up close.

Multifocal contact lenses offer multiple prescriptions in a single lens. These specially designed contact lenses can ensure your vision is clear at all distances. They often work for those who do not need distance correction, as well as those who are nearsighted or farsighted.

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is on the rise around the globe. And while more and more people are developing its symptoms, there are ways to manage its progression and preserve your child’s visual clarity. One of them is MiSight contact lenses.

MiSight contact lenses introduce a unique technique called “myopic defocusing” that focuses peripheral light just in front of your child’s retina. This sends signals to your eyes that slow down myopia progression

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is a non-surgical procedure where specialty contact lenses are used to reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, providing clear vision during the day.

Ortho-k lenses are custom-made to meet your child’s specific needs. They gently and gradually reshape the cornea, correcting your child’s vision. They have also been shown to slow myopia progression by half compared to standard eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Scleral contact lenses are larger in diameter than traditional contacts and rest on the sclera (the whites) of your eyes. These lenses allow for extra space over your cornea’s surface for extra breathability and contain a fluid reservoir that can help relieve dry eyes.

Scleral lenses can be an excellent option if traditional contact lenses aren’t compatible with your eyes due to dry eye and keratoconus.

We offer fittings for scleral lenses to help you find a comfortable, compatible fit for your eyes.
