Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is becoming more common, especially in children. Though there is no cure for myopia recent studies have suggested that there may be ways to control myopia in children and teens, slowing its progress.
Myopia can easily be corrected using eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, as children with myopia age they require higher prescriptions, and thicker glasses, to correct their vision.
Individuals with high levels of myopia have also been found to be predisposed to serious eye problems as they age. This could include early cataracts and even detached retinas. Myopia control can help slow the progression of myopia in children, reducing their chances of developing myopia-related complications and the strength of their prescription.
At Queensway Optometric Centre we use multifocal contact lenses to control myopia in children. Multifocal contact lenses are specialty lenses that have different prescriptions on different areas of the lens. This allows the lens to correct your child’s nearsightedness while reducing eye strain.
Our practice is conveniently located across the street from the Trillium Health Partners Mississauga Hospital.
